Featuring Singer José Méndez direct from Spain
Sachiko “La Chayí”, 2017 McKnight dancer fellow, presents QUEJÍO (Inflection of the voice in Flamenco) at the gorgeous and intimate Icehouse MPLS on Sunday September 16, featuring virtuosic singer José Méndez from renowned familia Méndez in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. He will be joined by three masterful artists; guitarist Kris “El Cuervo” Hill, dancers Myriam “La Vaquera” and Sachiko “La Chayí”. Join them for an evening filled with raw emotion and expression embodied in the sultry rhythm, sound and movement of Flamenco.

José Méndez (Singer direct from Jerez de la Frontera and Seville, Spain)
José Méndez was born into the legendary clan of Gypsy flamenco singers from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. A direct descendant of La Paquera, he is the grandson of the festero “El Pili”. He has worked for prestigious flamenco companies and artists such as Cristina Hoyos, Eva la Yerbabuena, Mario Maya, Manolete, El Güito, Manuela Carrasco, and El Farruco. He has toured to cities in Spain, Europe, and Japan and has sung in peñas and flamenco festivals. He has recorded discs such as "De Santiago a la Plazuela" and "Entre dos Barrios".
Myriam "La Vaquera" (Dancer direct from Seville, Spain)
Myriam “La Vaquera” is a flamenco dancer who represents the most traditional dance of Triana, Seville. She has studied extensively with Carmen Ledesma, one of the Flamenco masters. Despite her youth, she has already performed in many parts of the world. Her dance embodies the technique, character and expressive strength of flamenco art, especially in bulerías. Above all, she is an authentic specialist in transmitting the passion, joy of flamenco dancing, her art and rhythm in movements. She is a teacher in various dance schools in Seville including Latidos.
Kris "El Cuervo”Hill (Guitarist, Phoenix, AZ)
Kris ¨El Cuervo¨ Hill studied with renowned composer Daniel Lentz & performing artist Richard Lehrman developing his skills by composing for modern dance performances and accompanying ballet & modern dance classes on piano, guitar, and percussion at ASU for 10 years. He has spent the last five years studying flamenco guitar, singing, and dance in Sevilla, Spain with Juan del Gastor as well as performing in Andalucia, Spain with various artists and schools. He has worked and performed for the schools of Juana Amaya, Jose Galvan, Luis Peña, Juan Polvillo, and Flamencos por el Mundo. In 2014-2015 he had the honor of performing with el maestro José Galvan and his flamenco dance Company and performing at the Peña Torres Macarena for the Homenaje of Jose Galvan in January 2016. He has performed as principal guitarist with internationally renowned artists such as Jose Galvan, Javier Heredia, and Jose Mendez. In the U.S, he works as a guitarist for flamenco dance companies such as Carlota Santana: Flamenco Vivo(NYC), Inspiracion Flamenca(PHX), Jose Galvan(Sevilla), and Flamenco por la Vida(PHX).
Sachiko “La Chayí” (Dancer, Minneapolis)
A native of Osaka, Japan, Sachiko “La Chayí” Nishiuchi is a Twin Cities-based Flamenco dancer, teacher, choreographer and organizer. Besides her work as an independent artist, she directs Twin Cities Flamenco Collective. She has received awards, recognition and grants from Minnesota State Arts Board, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, the Jerome Foundation, the Minnesota SAGE Awards for Dance, and New York State Flamenco Certamen. Sachiko is the recipient of a 2017 McKnight Dancer Fellowship, administered by the Cowles Center and funded by the McKnight Foundation. Her dance and choreography have been commissioned and/or presented by The Walker Art Center, Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre, Intermedia Arts, Minneapolis Guitar Quartet, The Southern Theater, and Hamline University. She was a resident artist of Zorongo Flamenco from 2003 to 2009. She lived and studied the art of Flamenco in Seville, Spain from 2010 to 2015 which became the foundation of her current dance and work.
